1. Never been intimidated by- or fearful of- a recipe.
2. If a dish is executed poorly, try again. It doesn't have to be made immediately after the initial disappointment, but it needs to happen eventually!
3. If a recipe sounds tasty, but contains a component ingredient that your diner(s) think they hate, make it anyway. They'll probably never guess that they just ate something they used to despise, and it will open their mind to the adventures of culinary exploration.
4. Try preparing at least one ethnic/international dish that is completely different from anything else you've ever cooked.
5. At least once in a domestic chef's career, they should make every single component of a favorite dish from scratch. For example, a burger can be made with home-baked buns, hand-ground beef, and homemade ketchup. Many of the ingredients in lasagna can be homemade, too: noodles, tomato sauce, and ricotta or mozzarella cheeses.
6. Take photos of the meals you're proud of having made.
7. No matter how stressed out you might feel, or how demanding a dish may be, don't forget to stop and savor the simple joy of creating something delicious.
